Intro:

This Photoshop tutorial will show you a very effective way to get more detail out of a photo/picture.

Step 1:

Open up the image you wan't more detailed, or you can open this image I used. For viewing purpose I've shown my starting image below (note: it has been downsized).

Step 2:

Duplicate the photo in the layers palette by right-clicking and choosing "Duplicate layer", then name it "High pass layer". Then go to Filter > Other > High pass, and use a setting if 1.7px. If you used the same photo you should have the exact same result as me below. NOTE: If you get a photo with to many detail use another blend mode, something like overlay or soft light.

Now what high pass does is basically bevels the edges. So when we're going to apply the right blending option it will give a more detailed look. So that's what we're going to do now. Change the Layer blend mode in the layers palette to "Hard light", and that will leave you with the following.

Step 3:

Now we've got a pretty nice detailed look, but that ain't enough for this photoshop tutorial. Make a new layer on top of every other layer, simple hit this shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+N, name this layer Black brush. Fill the layer with black. Take out the eraser tool Get more detail out of a Photo, and use a soft eraser brush of 300px. Then click once in the middle of the newly created black brush layer. That will leave you with this.

Change the layer blend mode to soft light which gives you the following result.

And that's our final result of this photoshop tutorial. It's a real easy and most of all effective way of getting more detailed photos. Good luck on your further photoshop development!
