Intro:

In this free photoshop tutorial I will teach you how to cut out wavy hair and body, in this case the beautiful hair and body of Scarlett Johansson.

Step 1:

Open up the following picture of Scarlett Johansson.

Free Photoshop CS2 tutorial - Cut out hair and body with extract filter and pen-tool

Before we do anything unlock the layer by double-clicking it in the layers pallette, hit OK.
Then make a copy of the layer in the layers pallette, Just right-click the layer and "choose Duplicate layer...", I'll explain later why we need this layer copy. Hide the copied layer and move it below the original layer.

Step 2:

First off we're going to cut out the body with the pen-tool. The reason I use the pen-tool is because these women have such beautiful lines, with the pen-tool you can easily follow these lines and keep everything intact.

Take out the pen-tool (Shortcut: P), then and set it on "Paths"

Now trace around her entire body, but go WAY around her hair, the hair needs some special care later Wink . If you do not understand below is my trace for reference.

*Note: if you don't know how to trace follow this pen-tool photoshop tutorial

After your made the path right-click the path with the pen-tool still selected, and choose "Make selection". Leave it on 0 pixels, make sure Anti-aliased is checked, then hit OK. Now inverse the selection (Shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+I), make sure the original layer is selected in the layers pallette, if so hit delete on your keyboard.

You should have the following result.

Step 3:

Now let's cut out Scarlett's beautiful hair. Go to Filter > Extract. You can zoom in on the hair a bit with the Ctrl++ or with the zoom tool if you like, but I prefer the shortcut. Then use the hand tool to move the canvas down so we can see her whole hair.

Select the Edge highlighter tool (Shortcut: B). Use a Brush size of 20, leave everything else on default. Then make a somewhat similar highlight as mine below. And make sure you highlight the remaining background around the hair as well.

Then fill it with the Fill tool (Shortcut: G) and hit OK. This should have deleted the most part around the hair and the background.

If it deleted parts of hair you can bring it back to life again with the history brush (Shortcut: Y).If parts didn't delete that were supposed to, use the eraser tool (Shortcut: E) with a soft brush and different sizes (depends on how big the part is). Use the copied layer for reference, this way you'll see exactly what hair is deleted and if a part is background or not.

These techniques are very easy to do, everyone can do them! What you need to remember is that hair needs special care, especially these types of hair with many curls and all that. There for patience is HIGHLY recommended Wink

My result with a gradient background, and the Scarlett layer on Lighten..

Thanks for reading this free photoshop tutorial, hope you learned something here. One small note though, keep practising the extract filter and all that comes after it, it's easy to do but you'll need some training to master this technique.
